NorMinCoHRD Orients Proponents on LIB

Last October 27, 2010, the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Health Research & Development (NorMinCoHRD) organized a one-day budget orientation meeting for project proponents and researchers. The following institutions attended this event: (1) Central Mindanao University, (2) Capitol University, (3) Mindanao State University (MSU) - Marawi Campus, (4) MSU - Maguindanao, and (5) Department of Health - Center for Health Development 10 (DOH-CHD 10).
Mr. Jacinto Taran, Sr. Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Science & Technology - Region 10 (DOST - 10) emphasized the importance of strong public-private partnership in order to maximize the available resources and push through with different health research and development activities.
Ms. Merlita M. Opena, Chief Science Research Specialist of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) provided an overview regarding research funding. Basically, there were two mechanism: (1) the Regional Research Fund (RRF) for projects Php 200,000.00 and below and (2) direct funding from PCHRD, DOST and DOH. Both should be endorsed by the respective institutions, undergone technical and ethics review and approval from the consortium. Furthermore, a sample line-item budget (LIB) was presented. This is to guide them allocate their budget per item. This was followed by a productive and fruitful open forum session.

HERDIN Team holds training at the University of La Salette in Isabela. The said activity is being participated by 6 different institutions from different areas of the province. The institutions present in the activity are: 1.) St. Paul University Philippines; 2.) University of Cagayan Valley; 3.) University of La Salette; 4.) Isabela State University; 5.) Nueva Vizcaya State University; and 6.) University of St. Louis.

Call for Nominations for NAST & NSTW Awards

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the country's policy body on science and technology is now accepting nominees for the various awards it will be giving in 2011. These are:
a) Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Awards;
b) NAST Hugh Greenwood Environmental Science Award;
c) NAST-Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines (in the field of Chemistry for 2011);
d) NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists;
e) NAST-Lino Ed. Lim Educational Development Foundation, Inc. (LELEDFI) Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine;
f) Outstanding Scientific Paper Awards;
g) Outstanding Book and/or Monograph Awards;
h) Magsaysay Future Engineers/Technologists (MFET) Award and;
i) Best Scientific Poster Awards.
NAST also handles the DOST National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) Awards:
a) Outstanding Technology Commercialization (Gregorio Y. Zara Medal)
b) Outstanding Research and Development Award for Basic Research (Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal)
c) Outstanding Research and Development Award for Applied Research (Julian A. Banzon Medal)
d) Outstanding Science Administrator Award (Dioscoro L. Umali Medal)
Deadline for the submission of nominations is on 26 November 2010. For the scientific poster award, abstracts may be submitted not later than 15 January 2011.
