PHREB promotes health research ethics in Iloilo

Health researchers from Iloilo gathered as the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) conducted a two-day seminar-workshop on Ethics in Health Research on May 28 and 29, 2008 at the Iloilo Grand Hotel in Iloilo City.

The Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS)'s Committee on Ethics/PHREB in collaboration with United Medical Education and Development (UNIMED) and West Visayas Medical Center spearheaded the program as part of the Committee's aim in promoting health research ethics.

The two-day program showcased lectures, workshops and an open forum for the 42 participants. Among the topics featured were about the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA) and the Ethical Guidelines for International Collaborative Research discussed by PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya; Health Professionals as a Researcher by PHREB Chair Dr. Marita  Reyes; the Principles of Respect for Person and Justice in Research Fidelity in Research by PHREB Training Committee Chair Dr. Angeles Tan-Alora; the Institutional Ethics Review Board and its Operation by PHREB member Dr. Cecilia Tomas; the Legal Issues on Health Research by Dr./Atty. Albert Rebosa; the Application of the Principles of Beneficence and Non-Maleficence in Research by  UP Diliman Professor Peter Sy; and Good Clinical Practice discussed by United Laboratories Inc. Therapeutic Category Head Dr. Jonas Policarpio.

These series of trainings and seminar-workshops on health research ethics are continuously undertaken by the PHREB and held in different regions of the country since 2006, with sixth and latest held in Iloilo.
