40 researchers to participate in the 12th National Medical Writing Workshop and 5th Writeshop for Young Researchers

MALATE, Manila- Forty researchers will participate in the upcoming 12^th National Medical Writing Workshop and 5^th Writeshop for Young Researchers on 7-8 August 2017 at Pan Pacific Manila.

Organized by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), in cooperation with the Philippine Association of Medical Journal Editors (PAMJE) and Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME), the workshop aims to help researchers in health and health social sciences to acquire practical knowledge and skills in preparing a scientific article for publication in a scholarly peer-reviewed journal.

Among the lessons to be taught are structure and individual components of a scientific paper, process of preparing a manuscript, and the role of editors and peer reviewers and what they look for in a manuscript.

Under the guidance of the faculty and mentor-facilitators, the participants will also have the opportunity to review and revise their manuscripts. After the workshop, they are expected to submit their articles to an appropriate scholarly peer-reviewed journal within three months.

The 12^th National Medical Writing Workshop and 5^th Writeshop for Young Researchers will be held in line with the celebration of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week.

PCHRD scholars attend PHREB’s Basic Research Ethics Training

MANILA CITY, Metro Manila- The MD-PhD scholars of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) attended the Basic Research Ethics Training on 22-23 March 2017 at the C.O.M.E Conference Room, Paz Mendoza Hall, University of the Philippines (UP) Manila.

Led by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), the training provided scholars with knowledge on how to conduct ethical research to assist them in the development of their masteral or dissertation requirements.

The speakers, namely Dr. Maria Salome Vios and Dr. Sonia Bongala, Chair and Vice-Chair of the PHREB Committee on Standards and Accreditation (PHREB CSA), emphasized the role of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) in ensuring the welfare, safety, and protection of the research participants from any possible scientific advancements of a research protocol.

Dr. Vios and Dr. Bongala also discussed various international, national, and institutional controls that guide researchers on doing ethical research. They reminded the scholars to treat RECs as support institutions in improving the outcomes of their research and not as a hindrance in implementing their objectives.

The MD-PhD Molecular Medicine Program is a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through PCHRD, and UP Manila, through the College of Medicine, to train aspiring physician-scientists for careers dedicated to the advancement of health through biomedical research.

PHREB capacitates members on GCP

QUEZON CITY, Metro Manila- The Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) conducted a training on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) on 7-10 March at Toscana Hall, Torre Venezia Suites, Timog Avenue.

The activity aims to improve the skills of PHREB’s Committee on Information Dissemination, Training, and Advocacy (CIDTA) and National Ethics Committee (NEC) members in conducting training programs such as Good Research Practice Training, Basic Research Ethics Training, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Workshop, and Research Ethics Committee Staff Training.

Included in the discussions were important factors to consider and use during the conduct of training namely content, participants, goals, and tools. The principles of GCP, roles and responsibilities of investigators, and assessment of protocols based on common issues accompanying clinical trials were also tackled.

The activity also harmonizes the understanding of the participants in communicating knowledge by identifying the key challenges that they have encountered during the conduct of training as well as the key qualities of an effective educator.

Dr. Fidela Moreno of the University of Santo Tomas and Intermountain Heart Institute, Dr. Joseph Marzo of the PAREXEL Clinical Research Philippines, and Ms. Ma. Research translation gaps cited in Policy Forum

PASAY CITY – The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) held a Research to Policy Process Forum last 17 March 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City focusing on the process of and challenges in creating research-based policies for the Filipino community.

Dr. Gloria Nenita Velasco, Medical Officer IV of the Department of Health – Health Policy Development and Planning Bureau, talked about the current challenges and possible solutions to increase research to policy turn-out in the country. In her talk, she cited 1) limited research production due to poor data collection and limited funds, 2) low research credibility due to poor evidence, and 3) limited appreciation of research to policy impacts as challenges affecting research uptake. Dr. Velasco also suggested that health priorities should be policy-driven to ensure that health researches will be utilized by the people through policy implementation. Research co-production and increased support for evidence-based researches were also cited as strategies to effectively turn research into concrete policies.

Former UP Professor, Dr. Fely Marilyn Lorenzo, talks about transforming a research manuscript into a policy document during the PCHRD 35^th Anniversary Research to Policy Forum last 17 March 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.

The process of transforming research into a policy document was also discussed in the forum. Apart from data and findings, Dr. Fely Marilyn E. Lorenzo, former Professor of the Department of Health Policy and Administration – University of the Philippines Manila said that policy documents must be able to capture the views and wishes of the beneficiaries, opinions of the researchers, and testimonials, as well. An effective policy research must be problem-driven, multi-dimensional, flexible, and strongly evidence-based, she cited. On the issue of policy adoption as a major challenge in implementing research-based policies, “It’s always prudent to consult with stakeholders/end-users,” says Dr. Lorenzo.

The Research to Policy Forum was part of the PCHRD 35th Anniversary Celebration attended by health researchers and stakeholders nationwide.

PCHRD Executive Director cites accomplishments, emphasizes importance of translating science to benefits

PASAY CITY, Metro Manila- “The presence of health research in the regions is now more evident,” thus emphasized by Executive Director Jaime Montoya in the recent celebration of the 35^th anniversary of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) on 17 March 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

According to Dr. Montoya, the event is more than an anniversary but a celebration of the commitment and dedication of the Council to carry out programs which enhance research productivity. He then cited various accomplishments of the Council including the 10 Tuklas Lunas Development Centers established in seven regions, 1000 RxBox devices to be deployed to 1,000 health centers across the country, and expansion of eHATID project to HATID ASEAN (Health Technologies for Informed Decision making in the Association of South East Asian Nations).

Responding to the impact of disasters and climate change on health in the country, the Council also added Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Health (DRR-CCA Health) as new priority area for research. As the secretariat of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), PCHRD also accredited 48 research ethics committees.

Dr. Montoya also shared that the Council will disseminate the PNHRS Guidelines for Health Research Prioritization to research institutions across the country. “It is with great hope that through this document, our research institutions and regional research consortia will be more empowered in terms of preparation, implementation, and post-implementation of their research agenda,” he added.

Discussing the celebration’s theme, Dr. Montoya emphasized that research process does not end with project completion alone but should be translated into quantifiable outputs that empower beneficiaries to take care of their health.

“The accomplishments of PCHRD are the results of the hard work of its dedicated people and committed partners,” Dr. Montoya said as he urged the people and partners of the Council to continue giving their best and working with greater passion. n
